I’ve never shied away from speaking out. Anyone who knows me can attest to that. This is likely because activism & social justice is in my DNA. I come from a family of doctors, lawyers, leaders and trailblazers across all walks of life, and it’s that very DNA which has always inspired me to make my voice heard, to be in the room, to take my seat at the table and to continue to step up and light the way. It’s that same drive that compelled my brother and I to fight for the lives of young black men and women. We deserve it and I will always fight for it. I don’t want to echo or parrot the thoughts that so many have already shared. But I do want to make it clear that I will use my platform, my voice and the position of leadership that I’ve been granted to make my statement very clear: inequality happens every day and none of us are equal until we all are equal. It’s my hope that after all the words are said, and the social media content is posted, that the real work starts. I’m here and ready to pull up my sleeves and do my part.
